Funschool Co-op Won the Lottery!

Fifth grade students invited to attend Trail of History school day
 Trail of History
Each year, McHenry County families are treated to a large scale interpretive event of what life was like in the Northwest Territory.  The event takes place in Glacial Park on October 18th &19th from 9AM-4PM. Click Here to order discounted advanced tickets for October 18th.

On October 17th,  from 9AM-1PM, 20 fifth grade students and 5 chaperones will get to experience the Trail during the special school day performance.  This is a high honor as hundreds of schools enter a lottery to attend this event.  If your student is a fifth grader (age 10 by Sept 1, 2008 and not yet 12 by October 17th, 2008) and is interested in this special event, please read the following details and fill out the registration form below by September 30th.

Question: Since we homeschool, my child can be in whatever grade I say they are in, can I put my 9 year old, and/or 15 year old in fifth grade for the day?
Answer: When I called to inquire about this event, I spent a long time talking with the staff at MCCD about the special needs of homeschool groups with regard to attending field trips as a family.  While the organizers are sympathetic to our issues they are simply unable to open this opportunity to our group as a whole.  We are allowed to bring 5 chaperones (over age 21) and 20 children who meet the age requirements for a fifth grader as described above.  Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.  By following the rules of the program I am hoping we are able to secure this spot in the program for many years to come so our children can enjoy it when they reach that age.  If we can set a good example for homeschool groups, perhaps the organizers will decide that they enjoy working with homeschoolers so much that it is worth it to perform a homeschool group day in the future.

Question: How will the students travel to the performance?
Answer: Participants will be required to sign a field trip waiver and to arrange for a ride with one of the five chaperones.  If there is sufficient interest, we will look into the possibility of renting a bus for the day. Funschool Co-op will not be responsible for ride arrangements and advises parents that they are fully responsible for determining the safety of their student.

Question: What is the cost? What will the students do there?
Answer: This event will be FREE to Funschool Co-op members.  Students will "travel back in time" and enjoy seven different 15 minute demonstrations throughout the day.  Students will bring a sack lunch to enjoy on the grounds.

Question: What if less than 20 Funschool students qualify for the program?
Answer: Qualifying students will be able to invite a qualifying, homeschooled friend to join this trip.  The non-member friend will need to pay a $35 field trip fee and the parent/guardian will need to sign all forms and waivers and arrange transportation as stated above.  If there are still open spaces, then the opportunity will be announced to the Funschool Co-op Newsletter list and registrations will be accepted until the program is full.

FAQ and  Policies and Guidelines

Why is it called Funschool?  Is it a school? Is it a true co-op?
This venture was named "Funschool" by my daughter who has never been to a large school and believes that learning is fun.  I agreed because "Passionate Parents Uniting and Striving for Unique Opportunities to Inspire and Educate Terrific Kids in a Diverse and Inclusive Environment" did not make for a snappy acronym or an easy URL.

As I researched the true meanings of FUN and SCHOOL I found on Wikipedia:
Fun is the expenditure of time in a manner designed for therapeutic refreshment of one's body or mind.
A School (from Greek - scholeion) is an institution designed to allow and encourage students (or "pupils") to learn, under the supervision of teachers

This fits our family's ideal for this venture perfectly!  While we do not attempt to be a school where you send your children to be educated by others and we are not truly a co-op because we are operating as a business, we are striving to make a place where you and your family can come to meet like-minded families and have FUN and to be INSPIRED to LEARN from people who are teaching subjects they are passionate about.

In the future, we hope to organize as a not for profit education foundation to carry on this mission, but for now, we are operating as a sole proprietorship to allow us to maintain a business identity and apply for the insurance required to host a program like this one.

Do I need to teach or volunteer to be a part of the co-op?
Your help and expertise is welcome!  Ideally, each parent will assist with a class or as a hall monitor for one hour each class day. Back up teachers are needed in the event a teacher is ill or has an emergecy.  If you would like to teach for the co-op you are welcome to submit a Teacher Application to be considered for future sessions.

Can I drop off my child for classes?
NO - We're sorry, but due to insurance and liability concerns, you must remain on the premises while your children are in classes (even teenagers).  There is ample space to wait with children who are not participating and our hope is that a strong community will develop because this space and time is available for parents to make connections. Please read the complete Policies and Guidelines document for specifics.

Will the teachers be teaching any particular religion or other beliefs?
NO -
Classes are geared toward teaching in a way that is respectful to all, no matter what their homeschooling style or religious beliefs.  We encourage you to get to know the teachers for the classes you are choosing and to spend as much time in the classroom as you would like.  Please be sure the teacher and the material is a good fit for your child.  Everyone will have good time when they are involved in a pursuit that is truly of interest.  You can email a teacher directly by clicking on their name in the Teacher Information section.

How do I know a teacher is suitable for my child?
Funschool Co-op will ensure that there are two adults in each classroom at all times, but parents are advised that they are responsible for their own child's safety at all times and should decide for themselves if they are comfortable with a teacher before they leave their child unattended in the classroom.  Parents are always welcome to attend classes with their child (with siblings in tow if they are not disruptive) as long as they are not disruptive.  Should a parent have a disagreement with the subject or information that is being presented, the parent may address this with the teacher outside of class.  Should the parent have an issue with the teacher's conduct or demeanor, they should remove their student from the class and let the Funschool Co-op know of their concerns.
Please read the complete Policies and Guidelines document for specifics.

Is there a dress code or other conduct guidelines my family should be aware of?
While there is not a formal dress code, parents should be aware that we are meeting in a church building.  While Funschool Co-op is not affiliated with the church, families should observe a respectful dress code while in the church building (fore go wearing suggestive or revealing clothing or clothing with language that may be considered rude or disrespectful).  When in doubt, think "business casual."  Please read the complete Policies and Guidelines document for specifics.
