To restore joy and magic to King Arthur’s kingdom, the brother and sister team must travel to Camelot’s dreaded Otherworld and return with water from the mythical Cauldron of Memory and Imagination. If they fail, Camelot will be lost and forgotten forever—and the Magic Tree House will be destroyed! Rising to each new challenge with courage, humor and resourcefulness—and encountering a variety of fascinating characters along the way—Jack and Annie eventually discover that memory and imagination are gifts we can all use to fill our lives with magic.

Dear First-Grade Journal,

After sold-out shows in 2004 and 2005, Raue Center is bringing back this brand-new musical to Crystal Lake. And what do you know! It’s all about me, Junie B. Jones! This is the bestest musical ever, I tell you!

It’s got loads of funny songs and it’s based on a bunch of books this lady, Barbara Park, wrote about me and the things I do in first grade. In first grade, I meet new friends (like Herb and José, but not that tattle-tale May). But my new teacher, Mr. Scary, thinks I might need glasses. I also get to help my friend, the cafeteria lady! And I get to wear a real actual hair net too! Who knows...maybe someday, I’ll be the boss of the whole lunch operation! Whew! I’m glad I can write everything down in my Top-Secret Personal Beeswax Journal! And you know what? I think I might like first grade after all!

Love, (but not the mushy kind)

Junie B.

Christmas Carol

Meets Illinois Learning Standards: Language Arts: 2.B. Social Science: 15.A, 15.D and 16.A. Fine Arts: 27.B.

A Theatreworks/USA Production—www.theatreworksusa.org

In this musical interpretation of the Charles Dickens classic, we first meet the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge on Christmas Eve, as he is complaining about having to give his clerk, Bob Cratchit, the next day’s holiday off. Maintaining that Christmas is merely “humbug,” Scrooge refuses to contribute to the local charity’s fund for the poor. He even refuses the invitation of his nephew, Fred, to join his family for a holiday celebration.

It is only later that night when he is visited by a succession of spirits—the ghost of his deceased partner, Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas’ Past, Present and Yet-to-Come—that Ebenezer considers the consequences of his past and present actions and reconsiders his outlook on life.

Grateful for a “second chance,” Scrooge vows to help his fellow man—including Bob Cratchit and his frail little son, Tiny Tim—and is reunited with his family. Though it may have only been a dream, Ebenezer Scrooge is a changed man.

Nothing seems to interest young Milo—not his toys, not his friends and especially not school. But when a mysterious tollbooth materializes in his room, he “drives on through” to discover a world of inspiration! With the help of a time-keeping watchdog named Tock, Milo gets unstuck from the doldrums and embarks on a quest to rescue the princesses of Rhyme and Reason. Along the way, he reunites the dueling kingdoms of words and numbers and realizes that life is more exciting than his wildest dreams.

Adapted from Norton Juster’s beloved children’s book, this inventive musical features a melodious score by Arnold Black and witty lyrics full of wordplay by Pulitzer Prize and three-time Tony award winner Sheldon Harnick.
